In September 2026, I worked as a Metallurgy China interpreter at the exhibition in Shanghai. This article shares what the role involved and what future exhibitors can expect from exhibition accompanying interpreting.
What is Metallurgy China?

Metallurgy China was held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC), one of China’s main exhibition venues. This expo is a cornerstone event for professionals in metallurgy, metal processing, foundry, casting, forging, heat treatment, and related equipment. The 2026 edition brought together exhibitors and buyers from across the globe to explore cutting-edge machinery, advanced materials, and innovative solutions.
Because the event was co-located with Heavy Machinery and Wire & Tube China, it created a massive hub for related industries.
In such a high-energy environment, clear communication isn’t just a luxury—it is an absolute necessity.
My Role as a Metallurgy China Interpreter
It is important to distinguish between the two main types of trade show interpreting. Booth interpreters typically remain stationary at a single company’s stand, while exhibition accompanying interpreters are mobile partners who move with the client throughout the venue.
As a Metallurgy China interpreter, I supported the client over three days of meetings, technical discussions and supplier visits. My role was essentially exhibition accompanying interpreting, and my work included:

- Navigating the Floor: Accompanying my client through the Metallurgy China halls, and providing on-the-spot interpreting during brief visits to the co-located Heavy Machinery and Wire & Tube China shows.
- Facilitating Technical Dialogues: Interpreting product explanations, technical specifications, and business terms related to metallurgy, casting, forging, heat treatment, and heavy machinery.
- Handling Business Logistics: Clarifying critical details such as pricing, MOQ, lead time, certifications, shipping terms, and after-sales service.
- Strategic Support: Taking detailed notes and helping my client compare suppliers, technologies, and solutions in real time.
As a Metallurgy China interpreter, I also helped the client prepare for supplier meetings and follow up on technical questions after each session.
The realities of trade show interpreting

Trade show interpreting is vastly different from conference interpreting. Interpreters often work while standing and moving through noisy halls, navigating rapid speech, interruptions, heavy industry jargon, and various accents.
With three co-located exhibitions, the environment was incredibly busy and diverse. One conversation might focus on a specific alloy or furnace, while the next could involve wire drawing or tube production. Maintaining laser focus and adaptability in this setting is essential for success.
Why professional exhibition interpreters matter

A good exhibition interpreter does more than convert one language into another. During an exhibition visit, an experienced interpreter can:
- Help clients understand exhibitors quickly and accurately
- Prevent misunderstandings that could cost time or money
- Help clients compare suppliers and technologies
- Make international exhibitors feel respected and understood
- Keep conversations focused and productive
- Clarify technical details and business terms on the spot
For companies visiting international exhibitions, hiring a right accompanying interpreter is an investment, not an expense. The right language support can turn a busy exhibition visit into valuable business connections.
